Located on the Isthmus of Chignecto — the land-bridge between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick — Fort Cumberland, originally known as Fort Beauséjour, was built by the French in 1751 to defend against the British. In 1755, during the French & Indian War, the fort fell to British and colonial forces and was renamed Fort Cumberland.
