Hokes Bluff Alabama May 1st 1869 Archor W H Acknowledges receipt of letter of 14th March States that Clayborn Littlefield was bound or apprenticed to E. H. Johnson in the year 1866 by Lemuel Standfer Judge of Probate of Cherokee County says the boy is still living with Johnson who refuses to give him up to his father Recd May 13" '67 Ans May 13" '67 Recd June 3" '67 E & M 85 D of A 1867 Hd Qrs Dist of Alabama Montgomery May 13 1867 Respectfully referred to J. F. McGogy Sub Asst. Commr. Talladega Ala for investigation and report of both the within cases. Judge Standifer's attention should be called to Genl. Order's No. 3 current series from these Head Quarters and his action in this and similar cases of apprenticeship should be ascertained. In all cases where the action of the Probate Judge is deemed to be not in accordance with the spirit of the order referred to, report should be made to this office. In the case of wages withheld the parties should be brought before a Magistrate and if any of the latter neglect or refuse to give justice report should be made at once to this office.
