Sir I desire to call your attention to an orphan negro girl 6 or 7 years old. Whose mother died a few days since. The child has no Father or relatives- it was brought to us by one of my former slaves to take care of. My wife and self are quite willing to take the child and raise it.
I think it would to the the interest of the child- that in some way it should be bound to us- that we may have some legal right to control it and understanding that the Law of apprenticeship  has been suspended in the State I write you with a view of ascertaining if you have the power or the right to bind her over to us.
