The appointment of fifty policemen [[strikethrough]] would of [[/strikethrough]] from the colored men would give to them 60.000$ - which would be a godsend in this their hour of distress & need. 
We pay a pole tax alone of 20.000$ in this city besides the other taxes to support the state and city governments, and we do think we should have more of the benefits of such governments.
The policy which some of our leaders think best, viz., to pander to a conservative element at the expense of our legal rights & just privileges - we think neither wise nor just.
