Marion Feby 18th 1867 Maj Gnl - Wager Swayne Montgomery Dear Sir I have had a conference with Mr. T. G. Stuart who has charge of the school for Colored persons of Marion in regard to the necessity and policy of building a house for the use of the school - I have no hesitation in giving it as my opinion that there is an absolute necessity for such a building, and that policy requires that it be built if the means can be furnished There are 177 scholars in the school I am informed by Mr Stuart and no doubt the number would increase to 250 or 300 if there was a building large enough to accommodate them - no house can be rented of sufficient dimension to afford the necessary room for this large and increasing school Our people are unable to build a
