taken of it - on Saturday 11th inst while I was about in another part of the county, some half dozen or more souls got up a difficulty & fights with members of the Union League - with no other view than to break it up - threating no more leagues should be held - charging and telling the people black and white, that the continuances of them would produce insurrectores among the blacks which would end in a war of races. Houses are got last we held our league meeting- but had a lean attendance of whites on account of the fear which had been inspired by the threat that could be a difficulty while the blacks came in and some sixty men initiated. I have gone thus into detail to show that there is a continuation to deter and prevent the black element especially from attending political meetings, or from being informed of their political rights and duties, unless the wht element are the teachers. We have applied to Gen Swayne for more military force to be sent to this end of the state (there being only sixty soldiers stationed at Huntsville) but he writes me there is but one company of cavalry in the State and so small a force of Infantry, that now have two companies can not be sent to North Alabama.
