Greenville Ala May 23 1867 Mr Peck Dear Sir I this morning take the opportunity of answering your order I should have done it at home but was coming to Greenville & could send it direct to montgomery from here I now state to you all that I know about the case of that Freedman that was hung near Clayhill last winter there was no warrent for him when Mr J O C Wilkerson & Moore arrested him he never was brought before me nor no other mgistrate he was carried to Cockrans & turned over to him for the reward which was offered for him by Cockran which Wilkerson told me afterwards there was a sale a Mr Mcguires & I was there attending the sale where I saw Mr John Barlow have him the freedman with a small rope round his neck with some little boys helping him to guard him & I suposed one of the Recd May 25" 67
