Treasury Department
January 30th 1869

Sir

I have the honor to state, relative to the Marine Hospital at Mobile, that Major Genl. Swayne requested authority from this Department on August 2nd 1866, to transfer the marine patients in the building to another hospital, stating that they should be "full as well cared for and without increased expense."

The building was then in charge of the military authorities, and the rate paid for care of marine patients, "seventy five cents per diem". The Collector was at once instructed to make arrangements for the removal, but it appearing that the city Hospitals would not receive them for less than $1.25 per diem, he was directed on August 18th to confer with General Swayne on his arrival at Mobile, and to report the result.
