If I understand it right the military bill was intended for a protection to all loyal citizens in the South. I have a case to state to you hoping to find protection. When the War commenced I was opposed to it, and by so doing made a great many enemys in this part of the country. Since the close of the War these enemys have tried to oppress me in every possible way. Being much in debt, I hired Freedmen and went to work on my farm to make something to pay my debts. My creditors would not wait on me, but sold my land and stock and indeed everything I owned at a great sacrifice. They bought the land themselves, but could not get the Freedmen to stay on the place, and work unless I remained with them. I agreed to do so, provisions and team for attending the crop. One of
