Your favor of June 5th was handed to me though [[through]] Dr Clements asking me to give you information on certain points connected with the negroes of this county.

In compliance with your request I, at the earliest convenience give you as true & correct statements applicable to each point of enquiry as are in my power to give you & I think I'm sufficiently acquainted with the facts relative to the School question to say no interference with the organization of a school has taken place here to my knowledge & at this point has been made the only attempt to establish a school for the negroes that I have heard of I think the cause of the failure, is the State of Public Sentiment in regard to the duty that each feels in this matter no one or [[?]] not many except for political purposes are inclined to aid in the elevation of the negroes in social equality but all are perfectly willing that the Government discharge its obligation
