Personally appeared before me, C. W. Chapman, Agt. Bureau R. F. & A. L. Columbus, Georgia, Jim Whitaker, freedman, who being duly sworn says, that he contracted for himself and wife Margaret, to labor on the land and under the direction of L. B. Howard of Russell Co. Ala, during the year 1866, and said Jim was to receive for the services of himself & wife, one fourth of the crop produced that the said Jim & wife remained with the aforesaid Howard to the end of the year 1866, but have never received any portion of the crop, nor any compensation for their services. Said Jim further swears that he hired to said J. B. Howard, his son Millege, for the sum of Seventy Five Dollars for his services during the year 1866, and that he, the said Jim, has never been paid for any part of his services. Jim prays that said Howard may be compelled to pay him his just & proper dues.
