Maj. Gen. Swayne
Dear Sir:
The undersigned, an acting Justice of the Peace in & for State & county aforesaid, respectfully showeth: That one Wade Pressly, a freedman, visited & claimed one Hannah Dulany, a freedwoman, as his wife, as was the custom in the days of slavery. That by said Hannah he had two children, Milton a boy, aged about 12 years, & Effie, a girl, aged about six years. That in 1863, sometime, said Wade abandoned said Hannah & took up with one Dolly Pressly, whom he claimed, lived with, & by whom, he also has children. He also kept other women at the same time he had Dolly, but whom it is unnecessary to name. Said Wade now has abandoned said Dolly, & on my place is living with one Lucy, a freedwoman, by whom he has no children. Wade says he "took up with" said Lucy "last Christmas a year ago." Dr JH Pressly, his former owner, says, "sometime last summer". Said Wade, about the first of the present year, took from his original wife, to wit Hannah Dulany, her eldest child & only help, to wit, Milton, & left said Hannah to support herself & youngest child as best she can. Of my own knowledge I know that said Wade never has contributed anything to the support & comfort of said child, Milton, & that he wants him & uses him on my place as a sort of waiting boy for the woman
