Genl Wager Swayne,
Montgomery, Ala.

Sir,

At a recent session of the Circuit Board of Bullock County, Judge Clayton presiding, Burk Bean, a colored man, was sentenced to two years' labor in the "Chain Gang" in this County. He was charged with having stolen two horses, and was convicted on his own confession.

This is the third time he has been arrested by civil authority and __ 1st for violation of contract; 2nd and 3rd for stealing.

I am the Superintendant of Public Works in this county, and consequently the said man has been placed in my charge. As you have issued an order discontinuing the use of Chain Gangs, which annuls the decision of Judge Clayton, you will very greatly oblige me by informing me as to the, disposition you would have me make of [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] of the above-named prisoner.

Very Respectfully Your Obdt Servt
A. M. Griswold.
