Maj. Gen. Wager Swayne,

Dear Sir:

The public timber in Mobile and Baldwin Counties is being destroyed at a fearful rate, and if the office of keeper of the public timber is not abolished we recommend to you the appointment of Samuel J. Magill of Mobile County to that position. If the office is as we hear abolished we recommend that you appoint him under your great authority and duty as Commander of District as being absolutely necessary to [[strikethrough]] destroy [[/strikethrough]] prevent the destruction of our immense amounts of public property.
