E & M 14 D of A 1867 Hd Qrs Dist of Alabama Montgomery May 9" 1867 Respectfully returned to Sam S Gardner Greenville Ala After date of the letter referred to within, you stated that you could not get a clerk to take the oath in Greenville, When you were directed not to employ a clerk but that one would be sent you from here. You should have informed this office immediately by upon finding a man who would suit you in which case it would be unnecessary to have one sent from these Hd Qrs, your failure to do which, as well as your not having complied with Col Cadles letter relative to the wages authorized to be paid requires that your actions in this case be disapproved. You can send vouchers for the time Mr. O'Connor was employed in your office prior to the 4th inst. at the rate of $75 per month. By Command of Maj Genl. Wager Swayne J.F.
