Assistant Quartermaster's Office
Mobile, Ala. May 22nd 1867.

O.D. Kinsman
Sub-Assistant Commissioner
Bureau R. F. and A.L.
Montgomery, Ala.

In reply to your communication of the 20th inst. relative to my assuming the duties of Quartermaster for the Bureau at this Post. in addition to those with which I am already charged, I would respectfully state, my present duties are somewhat arduous and would prefer some other officer be selected for the position in question. But if Lieut Logan is to be relieved and it is deemed essential to the public service that I should assume his duties, I might (by the aid of the clerical force you offer) perform the duty. My acceptance of such position from request might create perhaps some dissatisfaction, and in the event of my being charged with this additional duty, I would consider it of material importance to have the concurrence of those immediately interested by such change. Having this day received a Leave of absence for thirty days, and start for my home in Illinois to-morrow, it would not be possible for me to enter upon the duty in question until my return, and therefore would respectfully recommend the appointment of some other officer
