Office of Sub-Assistant Commissioner,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands.
Sub District of Greenville,
Greenville, Ala., May 25th 1867.

Col. O.D. Kinsman,
Sub. Asst. Comm'r

Colonel:
I have the honor to report that the subpoena served upon me is for my appearance as a witness in a case between two Dallas planters. I have no idea what they suspect to prove by me. Supposing that you might assume the right to forbid my attendance if you saw fit, and thus relieve me from the penalty of non attendance, I referred the case to you for instructions.

Very Respectfully
Sam S. Gardner
Sub Asst. Comm'r
