come in, he said he would & seemed glad that I let him know in time.

He took the crop but instead of shiping himself or jointly with estate - he gave Col Ashford permission as Administrator to ship the cotton & pay the hands. There were 43 bales at the time ready - of the best of the crop. Col A. shiped of these 36 bales, but nothing was paid the labor. I had no chance to get out the crop in time & I had to move from the place before the whole crop was gined & baled. Col. A. had transferred the Stock to Mr Hedgepeth - and could not well, give me the mules to do the work, for although the freedman's Bureau had taken the cotton I was bound to get the crop ready for market. When I found I could not depend on Stock Maj Jones made arrangement with Ashford to get it out who agreed to do it at once. This was Jan 27th & the work ought to have been done in 10 or 12 days as there were 18 or 20 bales gined & only 24 or 25 to gin & the two amounts to bale.
