Uniontown Perry County Ala.
July 15th 1867

General
I was informed by Robt. Christian Esqr. today that he had recently tendered his resignation to our Probate Judge as Justice of the Piece and Agent of the Freedmans Bureau, because they conflicted with his interest as a practicing lawyer.

We respectfully petition the appointment of Mr. Benjamin R. Thomas of this Town to the position which Mr. Christian formerly held.

I know that I express the desire of all the Union men here, both White and Colored, when I make the above request. Mr. Thomas is a gentleman of excellent practical sense, and education fully sufficient to fill the place well. He was unanimously chosen by the people of Perry County (the Union people) to repesent them in the Montgomery Convention, and did so. I know that this is not a political office, but as the other Justice of this Beat (who lives in the County) is biterly opposed to our party, and as we Union people can expect to have but little favor shown us, we respectfully, but earnestly pray his appointment. The Freedmen would be delighted at it, and every white man should be satisfied. Mr. Thomas can take the Test Oath if necessary.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Svt.
