Sir;
In response to your communication of 21st inst. I have the honor to report that with the exeption of the cases referred to this office in your endorsement of 12" inst, there has been but one complaint arising from an attempt to prevent Freedmen from voting at the recent election.

James Sheldon, formerly Sheriff Mobile County, was said to have prevented his hands from coming to the polls by threatening to discharge them. The complaint is being investigated and report will be made.

Various complaints were made to Mayor Horton by men discharged for voting; but none were referred to this office. I learned the fact in conversation and requested to be informed
