as they could. And I would not atache any property because I did not wish to sacrifice their Property.

Now for this year, Col Wickersham wanted me to remain with him and as I wished to help Col Wickersham out of his embarassed Condition. I went to work with a will. He failed to field his hands as he agreed and at times it was a hard matter to keep them together. Now there was no compensation agreed upon for my services in March one had a difference I told him I wanted some money to get me some necessary articles that I needed. He excused himself that he would get them the next time he would go to Mobile. Then I Asked what wages he was going to pay me. He asked me what I aught to have I told I would leave that to him.
He says in the condition of the property then he could not say any definite. That the property was going to be sold in time and if he bought the plantation he could then give me a position that would pay me well. Then I made this proposition to him that I would work for him until June 1st 1867. Then I wanted a settlement as I had a payment to meet forth and I would leave it to him or any number of neighbors whom my services were worth from January 1st 1867 until June 1s 1867. He said that was more than he could ask of any man and he expressed it with tears in his eyes. The 1st of June came no settlement was made.
