3 In the spring of 1867, the said firm found it absolutely necessary to procure advances to purchase supplies to carry on the framing operations begun upon the plantation purchased from the said Phares and conveyed in said deeds to the said Gary, and the firm of Gary & Melton, Commissioner Merchants, as applied to for said advances.

4 Messrs Gary & Melton consented to make said advances upon conditions, and with the understanding, to which all the partners assented and agreed, that the said firm should give them, the said Gary & Melton, a "Planters field" on the crops grown upon the said premises;  and the said advances were so made by said Gary & Melton to the said Cecil, Bevill, & Lane in meat, corn money and bay mules, and good which were sold by the said Cecil Bevill & Lane to the Laborers on said farm; all of which advances entered into the production of the crop, grown upon the said premises, the present year.

5 On the 3rd day of October, 1867, Cecil Bevill & Lane, by Thos S. Bevill, one of the Partners, as aforesaid, in pursuance of said arrangement and understanding, executed a conveyance to the said Gary & Melton
