to deprive any of said freedom, of anything justly due them; but at the same time General, I respectfully submit, that the other parties having liens on said crops, by virtue of said deeds, and said "Planter's Lien", ought not to be deprived of more of said crops than is reasonably necessary to pay off the freedmen. What I desire therefore is, that it may be ascertained whether anything, and how much, is due any of said freedmen; that a sufficiency of the crops be appropriated to the payment of whatever may be found due them; and that the remainder, and all the other property covered by said conveyances, may be restored to me, or to said special coroner: and that you General, will give such orders as will accomplish these purposes, if they should seem to you, as they seem to me, to be obviously just.

In this connection, it may not be improper for me to state, that Mr. Cecil, one of the parties before referred to in said communication, warned me, that if I should interfere with, or remove any of said property he would bring the loyal league to operate on and against me.

Upon the whole, General, it seems to me, that Mr Phares, and Garey & Melton, are impeded in their just rights in the premises, and can obtain us redress, by due course of law, or otherwise, without your interposition. This I respectfully ask.

I am General, with high respect, Your obt. servt.
Jno H. Gary
