I am instructed by Mr F.L. Childs to say that he was injured to the extent of $100 last circuit court by a law on the statute Book of Alabama which required that no man would be allowed to employ a freedman who had previously [[strikethrough]] formerly [[/strikethrough]] engaged his services to another man. His statement is as follows "A man had been engaged by my employees, (who were to furnish all the labor) who had previously contracts to another man. I was sued for it though I had nothing to do with the man and at the last court I had to pay fine of $50 and costs." Please to bring this matter before the the military authorities at Montgomery. From my knowledge of the facts I am persuaded that Mr Childs has suffered injustly and if anything can be done for him you will be doing a good work.

I remain as ever yours truly J. B. Toffill
