On the 18th May 1867 Rev J.W. Purifoy, a Justice of the Peace for Wilcox County, issued two warrants of arrest, one for Ben Williams and the other for Eliza - upon complaint made by G.W. Chambers, "that about January 1867 they falsely pretended that they would live with and labor for G.W. Chambers and John Moore during the year 1867, and, by means of such false pretense, obtained from G.W. Chambers (Ben) shoes, tobacco and other goods and money Value, Ten Dollars and (Eliza) goods and money of Value, Fifteen Dollars"
By endorsement on the warrants Abram Hall was deputized by Rev. Purifoy to execute the warrants. Hall took with him Robert and Ephraim Chambers And Robertson to aid him in executing them. Mr Jos Soles, a Justice of the Peace for Lowndes County, by an endorsement agreeable to the Code of Alabama, authorized Hall to execute the warrants in Lowndes County. When Hall attempted to arrest Ben, the latter fled, and a pistol was fired up in the air to frighten him and stop him. Ben was not arrested. Eliza was arrested and taken to G.W. Chambers, but afterward she left there, and went to her husband. I do not say that the facts stated are positively true. I only say such are the facts according to the best information I can obtain.
