Dear Sir:

Last Saturday, the 29th ult., I received from Lt. Geo. Shorkley, Sub. Asst. Commr. at Selma, a letter enclosing a statement of yours to him in reference to an alledged interference of Ephraim Chambers And others with laborers of yours and Mr. Kilgore. 
The letter was dated 23d May last, and had been sent to the Post Office Department at Washington City, and returned from there to Lt. Shorkley, and by him forwarded to me, with an endorsement dated the 18th ult. He instructs me to have the Complaint made by you and one Ben Williams, a freedman, investigated and to report to him the result of the investigation. To have the matter properly investigated, it is absolutely necessary that you or Mr. Kilgore come and see me. I wish also that you bring with you the freedman Ben Williams; so as the necessary affidavits may be made out, if I deem it proper to have them made in the case.
