I have been connected with the Board, from the Organization of the present system, until two years since, when on account of my union sentiment, I was not re-elected. At present I am a member, under appointment from Genl. Pope. I can say truely that the affairs of the schools have been well managed, the Board having labored assiduously to build a class of schools that would compare favorably, with any institutions of the kind in the country. In fact, Mobile is the only place in the State, where anything like public schools have been organized.
The main want of the schools now, is school building and this want is increased by the large number of colored pupils that will have to be educated. The four new appointees when made to fill the places of retiring members, will give us a majority of loyal men in the Board, and we can give the right-direction to the future management of the Schools. But I do not, in the present temper of those who remain in the Board, anticipate any discord in our action. If then we can dispose of the Bonds which form the subject of this letter, + that soon, we can go to work at once, + have suitable buildings
