I told Holland that he would not be allowed to whip a Freedman and he then forbid the Freedman in question to ever come onto his place again.  Although said Freedman was Kinchens foreman and could not well be spared.  I advised a light fine but to no avail.  After the crop was made and partly gathered said Holland takes and sells five bags making no returns to Kinchen who was in debt to parties in Columbus for the bagging and rope on the five bales When Holland was asked by Kinchen about his share of the cotton Hollands only reply was "you have no cotton." Kinchen then came to me and I sent for Holland and Kinchen to come and settle or arbitrate their a/c's.

They came accordingly on the 2nd inst and Holland had a long string of a/c's for extra work that he claimed to have furnished which Kinchen refused to allow on the ground that a large crop of corn was made which he Kinchen had no share of. After looking over this accounts I concluded that if I allowed Hollands a/c and and contract that Kinchen would be indebted to Holland after giving him all of the crop and feeding and paying the hands that made the crop.
