I have the honor to state that George Holland (Col'd) has been farming this year with a man by the name of J.L. Simpson, on a plantation belonging to the latter. By their contract Holland was to receive one half of all the cotton & corn he raised.

Holland raised a good crop as the following report will show, and a few days ago he came to Capt. Gardner and complained that Simpson had told him he was in his (Simpson's) debt $109. In this amount Simpson has charged Holland for time he lost in attending one political meeting at this place last Summer, and one day at the Election. After the Election he told Holland he should leave, and that "if he wanted to [[strikethrough]] he could [[/strikethrough]] go to the damned Yankees (Bureau) he could do so, but they could render him no assistance."
