weeks he has had from seventy-five to one hundred cases wherein Col'd laborers were about to be defrauded of all they had made this year.
Many complains have come to my ears that white men who promised their laborers a portion of the crop they raise, are, on the slightest pretense driving them away, so they can claim their crops. Others are making daily threats of having the laborers imprisoned, telling them they can prove that they (the laborers) have committed crimes, of which they are entirely innocent. This is to make them leave their crop.
