Lieut. L. J. Whiting

Dear Sir

I received your kind letter a few days since requesting or notifying me as a Justice of the Peace for the County of Pike State of Ala to get up and the evidence in writing in the case between P. F. Grant & the freedman Levine Colain case about said Levine's wages last year as the case was sued before me & tried last May. It was first tried before me, then - as Levine was dissatisfied - I granted him a trial before a Jury of some reasonable men and they decided against him and yesterday the case was brought up the third time, since the beginning of the trials of said case there has been some time additional evidence. I have tried to do my whole duty in the matter from the beginning of the case up to the present, tried to do justice to both parties. I send up the proceedings of the whole matter as requested by you in your kind letter together with a copy of the contract between the parties, hoping that the same will be satisfactory with you for your investigation
I would like you would furnish me with a copy of the letter sent to you about this matter, as I would like to see what had been said about the same. Please write me again [[strikethrough]] so that [[/strikethrough]] & let me know what has been said or written to you about the case. Please let me hear from you soon. Direct yours to Pine Level Montgomery County Ala, I am respectfully your obedient servant &c
