Dear Sir
Enclosed you will find some papers which was handed me by FA Boswell an acting Justice of the Peace for this county, in relation to a trial had before [[strikethrough]] their [[/strikethrough]] his court, between Levise Colvin, a freedman and one P F Grant which includes the contract between the parties & the testimony which was addressed.

It appears that in 1866, Grant rented a piece of land from Dr G A Tompkins & hired the man Levise to cultivate it in cotton & was to give him one sixth of the produce, [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] He quit sometime during the month of Aug. & has now bro't suit to recover his wages. The evidence seems to be conflicting as to the cause of his quitting The plaintiff insisting that he quit for the reason that Grant failed to fund him, while the Defendant insisted that he had left a weeks provisions with Plaintiff which had not been consumed & that Plaintiff quit because he thought he could make more delivering for one Mr. McLaurin.

Be this as it may, the negro bro't his suit for forty dollars, & after as I have every reason to
