and that he did not consider the note good therefore he had better hold the contract as that bound the crop for the payment of his wages

Defendant P.F. Grant states that he had contracted with the Freedman Leven Colvin to work with him the year 1866 and that he complied with said contract and that he Leven quit work without his consent before the expiration of said contract and told him that he did not intend staying there any longer that he Leven said he could make more ditching for WIlliam McLaurine that he could to stay and gather the crop and did not gather the same further states that he Leven failed to comply with the contract as will be shone by said contract in several instance. On crop examination the defendant says that the principle part of his crop was t be planted in Cotton which was done defendant further says that Leven  proposed to him to put more land in corn than he did plant.
