Florence Ala Feby 6th, 1867.

Gen Swayne.
Montgomery Ala.

Sir
I am induced, by the advice of friends to lay my case before you. I am a colored man, a mechanic by trade, & entirely dependent on my labor for the support of my family.

During the war, while engaged at my work, a pretty large lot of my tools, were taken from me, at the residence of W. H. Key Esqr. 9 miles from this place, by a Company of Tenn Cavalry, (the 10th I believe).

I can satisfy you of the truth of my statement by undoubted evidence, and refer you to citizens of Florence - Gov. Patton included - I desire your advice whether to try to get pay for my tools, or not, by applying to the General Government, and if you think I can, please instruct me how to proceed -

Very Respectfully,
Alex Jones.
