Owing to the poverty and destitution of the country and want of confidence, even our undertakers & physicians fail to respond to a call, unless accompanied by cash. There is no such thing as credit in the country. If you could assist me in procuring corn to answer our purpose for a short time, until our present crop matures it would be a very great favor and I think you would not regret it. I think with the smile & favor of Heavin, if I can get a little assistance until our crops are gathered I shall get on - until then the smallest sum, I assure you, would be of the greatest assistance to me, & shall be dispensed of I assure you for the benefit of my Freedmen as well as myself.
