Mr Whitmore has been exceedingly kind and I am relying upon his advice in all that I do. Had a long interview with Mr Forney (Secretary of the Senate) and Senator Stewart in which I told them what I knew of the political condition of the South in general and Alabama in particular. Mr Forney (to whom I had a letter of introduction from Mr Keffer) of his own accord tendered me a letter of introduction to Secretary Stanton which I accepted. One of my letters has been forwarded (by mistake) from the office here to Alabama. I shall therefore telegraph Dr Kipp tomorrow to forward all my mail. I mention this in explanation. Attended morning service at St John's with the Witmores - also took tea and passed a portion of the evening with them. They desired to be remembered to you. Yours of the 17" mailed 19" reached me this morning. I shall show it to Mr Witmore in the morning and be careful to act on the suggestion. It has rained all the time
