April 7 1867

General as a Loyal Citizen passing through this section of the country I concluded it would not out of place to give you a short schetz  of my observations as came in the neighborhood of Alexandria Cahoun County Ala I heard that a Negro had served a White man, Callis went into the Court room the Man (Col) John Mattochs was sworn he stated that he was employed by one James Gladden & son for twelve months for the (300) three hundred dollars he had worked three months at which time a fight occurded he being beaten severly by Gladden & son the scars plainly to be seen while stading in the presence of the Court Gladden came forward and stated that John had worked the three months
