I have a friend Iowa Saml A Reed Ex Capt of my old Regiment who wishes to come south provided he can get into some suitable employment. Reed entered the service as a private of the 5th Iowa Vol Infty in 1861. For gallantry upon the battle field of Champion Hills - Miss in may 1863. at which place he received a severe wound Reed was commissioned as Capt of the 50th US Col Infty. Being a man of marked ability Capt Reed held several important positions during the three years he held his commission for some time he was Chief Ordnance Officer of Genl Hawkins Division after which for many months he was Judge Advocate in Miss.

At the time Reed entered the service in 1861 he was reading law since his return to civil life he has resumed the study of law but oweing [[owing]] to an unfortunate speculation Capt feels that at present he is unable to continue his studies
