Sir your letter of the 7th Inst, in relation to the Freedman that said he had made a contract with Mr. Frank Norris while intoxicated, came to hand, by last mail, after investigating the witnesses assigned to the Contract they say that the Freedman Tarlton was not intoxicated at the time, but got so in the Evening, he got Mr Norris to release him by paying or agreeing to pay $35. he sold his corn to Mr. Barns for $14 40/100 Dollars, to be paid to Norris or was paid to him, by the order of the Freedman. The Freedman Tarlton promised me if I would pay the balance of the $35, to Norris, $21 60/100 Norris could transfer the contract to me & he would move with me to Nixburg Coosa County Ala and him and his Wife Daughter & Son, would labor for me the present year, I told him, the amount in the contract to Norris was not as much as I would give him notwithstanding I had taken a Transfer of the written Contract, but at the same time told him if he preferred to have a part of the crop, that I would give what was customary in Coosa County, but that I wanted him to understand he must pay out of his wages the $21 60/100 Dollars I had to pay Norris, to get him released, he immediately refused, the next day after the contract
