Office of the Justice of the Peace,
Beat No 2 Girard Russell Co Alabama
April 5th 1867

Lieut J F Conyngham A.A.A.G.

Sir

By your order of March 26th addressed to J.F. Waddell Judge of Probate of this County published in Columbus Georgia Daily Newspapers releasing one Judy Harris Colored woman from sentence of Justice Court. I learn that it has been reported to you that the trial of this party "was irregular and not in accordance with teh civil laws of the state".

Thinking that this report does me injustice, and that this case may have been misrepresented to you, I beg permission to give you a plain statement of the facts elicited at the trial. Not for the purpose of influencing you to countermand your order, but simply to place myself in a proper light before you.

On the 13th of Feby 67, One James McGann a Master Mechanic in employ of G&M RR Company. This place, complained to me on oath that Judy Harris did steal from his house sundry articles valued at Twenty dollars or more. Upon this statement I issued a warrant for the arrest of said Judy Harris, which was executed by Constable, and Judy brought before me for trial
