necessary to have it done by the civil authorities, in accordance with the law that applied to the whites under similar circumstances. it was so done. I have seen the affidavit made by the husband of the boys' mother. I want the opportunity to prove that he has sworn falsely. He has been boasting frequently, since his marriage, that he wanted the boys to work for him, or to be hired out by him, so that he could controul the money, or their wages. His only object seems to have been, to controul the boys by marrying their mother. The most beneficial course to pursue for the boys & their mother, I imagine, will be the main object in the case, to be considered. & Therefore I should like to have you decide it. If you would send a person to represent the Freedman side, he should be at no expense here for house room, board, or lodging.
Hoping that you will grant the farms solicited

I will add that Mr. Stanton would not care whether the matter was tried here or in Tuskegee, as he has no personal intererest at stake. The community here are well posted on the case, and know many particulars that would rather it of public interest. I hope you will order the trial to take place here, either on the 3rd of June or at any other time more suitable. if your convenience requires it. Respectfully etc. J.S.M.
