In compliance with the enclosed endorsement I have visited Jacksonville county seat of Calhoun Co. Mr. Archers at Hoke's Bluff, Gedsden, county seat of Rom Co., also Center, county seat of Cherokee Co.- At Jacksonville I learned that James Gladden and son were arrested and tried by the Grand Jury April 1867 for an assault upon the person of John Mattock, James Gladden was fined $50% and cost, his son was fined $30% and cost, the cost of father and son $45% fine and cost $125%, also that said John Mattoch sued James Gladden for 3 months work before a Justice of Peace. Mattoch had no counsel and some informality occured in commencing the suit, for instance Mattock sued James Gladden sr. alone when Gladden jr. was the actual employer. John Mattock left Jacksonville and is now living with Mr. Mattoch his former master at Oxford, who intends to apply for a new trial with a view to recover John Mattoch's wages - I had a very satisfactory interview with Judge Hamlin, Judge Probate Bane Co.
