At all times I advised the freedmen to abandon such threats, and I am glad to say that everything is going on quietly, and that the wheat is now being harvested, The Prentencing law in this county is entirely annulled Judge Thornton revokes all indentures that come under General Order No. 3. in application, The same promise has been made to me in other counties, but I think that frequent inspection or visits to all parts of each county would insure the prompt execution of this, or similar orders. Poor houses is but little attention paid to whatever, in this county, two white persons are supported at the expense of the county. six white persons in Calhoun, two white, and one colored persons in Cherokee, the counties are entirely devoid of means, so much so that it has been very difficult for either of the Counties to pay for transporting supplies from this depot to place of distribution in the respective counties. The system of taxation is governed by the laws of the state, with an additional special tax in this county of 50cts on property but not on persons, this is done, by an act of the legislature, for the express purpose of building a jail in this county, which law effects freedmen but little. We have a flourishing freedmen's school at this place 155 scholars, under the tutorship of Mrs. Hopson, Miss Phelps, and Yancey Sims, (col'd) all of whom are employed by the "Cleveland Freedmen's Aid Association." As a general thing there is a feeling of confidence existing between the two races, which I have ever driven to cultivate. Complaints of outrage are somewhat on the decrease,
