Col. O. D. Kinsman
Sub Asst. Commss'r.
Montgomery Ala.

Colonel,
In reply to yours respecting J. W. Cogswell, late Captain 34th New Jersey Inf. Vols. I have the honor to state that personally I am unacquainted with the gentleman, but upon making inquiries of late members of the 34th N.J. Vols. I learn that in 1866 said J. W. Cogswell was keeping a drinking saloon 110 Race St. Philadelphia; that at one time he was confined in the guard house at Montgomery. As regards his honor and morality my inquiries seem to be unfavorable
I am Colonel
Very Respectfully
Your obd't serv't
