in this case a man can read it as he runs. All I want is a fair investigation of the case and I think we have a right to it. I wrote to your agent Callis at Huntsville he would not condescend to answer my letter
How your agents conscientiously let the Freedmen be swindled as they have been in this case and they appointed to take care to their interest I cannot comprehend For if the first cotton had been sold for their bennefit it would have paid all the claims of the Labors and money left.
Ashford must have realized between Five and Six Thousand dollars and Mr Goodfellow receives Two Thousand dollars or the Freedsmen. Do not understand that I was one of the Freedsmen, I was one of the managers and I did not receive one cent for my years Labor. It is very disagreeable to have a difficulty with those that are not our friends But when our friends treat us as we have been in this case it is Intolerable. If we cannot get justice through you we will be compelled to draw up Petition to the Head of the Freedsmen Bureau signed by all the Freedmen that was swindled in this case which will amount to sixty four. with all the evidence we cant get to sustain it. But if you will interest yourself in the matter you can settle it in a very short time. For Harris estate was to have one Half and Goodfellow to have the other half. But instead of the Bureau getting one Half of the cotton as sold was put off with the last of the cotton when it was the administrators neglect in not gining the cotton in proper time and letting it get damaged. Every thing I have stated above I am prepared to prove as your agent at Morton espressed himself before some Gentlemen that Goodfellow had been badly treated Mr Goodfellow has no knowledge that I write this letter he is still waiting for a answer to his letter for he has the utmost confidence you will have the Business all made right. Please to answer this and oblige your friend
