Gen Swayne Courtland Alabama
September 5, 1867

Sir,
I wrote to you on the 15th of August and I have not received an answer. I have been in Public Stations for Twenty odd years of my life and have written many letters to different officers, but have never failed to receive an answer, until I wrote to the Freedsmen Bureau officers on business that I am interested in, and was swindled out of wages for one year's Labor. I would have been pleased to have received an answer. For all we want is a fair investigation of the Business. For you can see their has been a swindle and we want to find who is the man. Just think yourself Fourty Three Bales of Cotton that was coming to the Labors of T.M. Goodfellow not receiving Two Thousand dollars. When they wear intitled to the first Lien on the Crops by the Laws of Alabama. Several appeals have been made to the agent at Huntsville and he takes no notice of them and we have no confidence that He will have a fair investigation of the Business. It is useless to try to have it smothered up. For we are determined if we cannot get justice throug you we will appeal to the Head of the Freedsmen Bureau, The President and Congress. We do wish to get justice through you as we do not wish
