I understood a few days since that you were the Gentleman that oficiated awhile as P.M in Memphis, Tn, if so you may have some recollection of me. on Sunday morning I was sent back to the officer on Picket, refusing to pass me. I immediately returned and report to Genl Hurlbut who gave me a letter of introduction to you remarking that it was Sunday & that you did not attend to duty on Sundays but that he felt confident that he would attend to my business. I had been in the habit of passing in and out the lines at my pleasure having acted as servent for almost every Genl that [[strikethrough]] held [[/strikethrough]] commanded at Mem. I formerly belonged to the U S Navy had been an officer some 30 odd years until 1855 when I was droped by the Retaining Board: I am a native of Loudon Cty Va. my family formerly resided in this neighborhood  I left home in 1850 to take charge of the U.S. Navy Yard at Memphis, and was living some 12 miles from M when this war broke out.
