Montgomery, Feby. 23rd/67

Maj. Gen. Swain

Sir-
The bearer Augustus Williams, a Freedman, is living on my plantation, free of rent, as I have his children hired for the years He says he is about eighty years of age, and his wife Winney about seventy, who resides with him. I do not think they are capable of making a support, and he has requested me to state what I know, thinking it might benefit him in getting some assistance from the government.
I never knew him till this year; but he certainly is in very destitute circumstances.
I am Most Respectfy
Yours, Wm. H. Osborne
