Bvt Maj Gen. Wager Swayne
Montgomery Ala,

Gen.
I have the honor to submit the following report of the recent riot at this place. At the circus on the evening of the 12th inst. Thos Williams col'd. called upon James Chestnut Col'd. to settle a/c, Chestnut refused to settle and after some angry words passed between the parties Chestnut Stabbed Williams with a Knife. The marshal and other parties interfered, whereupon a general firing of pistols ensued, in which several men were shot, none killed or dangerously wounded however as heretofore reported. There having been no legal examination of witnesses as yet, and there being so many conflicting reports I am unable to give particulars.
Very Respectfully
Your obt Servt
