I concluded to do as I had good reason to believe the rest did, and accordingly took a small quantity of such Stores as I knew we were ahead on to satisfy in part, the claim of my boarding master. At the time this was done I thought nothing of it, knowing as I did that it was an every day occurrence, but have since had cause sufficient to deeply regret it. It is the first criminal act of my life, and it will be a lesson to me as long as I live. I am twenty one years of age my home is in New York City and I can furnish the highest testimonials from some of first men of that City as to my social standing, personal character, and ability as a Clerk. I make the above application by letter because I am short of Funds and do not feel able to go to the expense of a trip to Montgomery without I know there is a probability of my succeeding in getting something to do.
